1) Find an open, outdoor
location.
Paved areas or parks with short, damp grass are good locations. We wouldn't
recommend spinning indoors unless you're a professional.
2) Make sure you have the following safety gear: a first aid kit, a
fire extinguisher, and a wet towel.
3) Have someone you trust to be your safety. A safety should be standing
nearby with a damp towel in their hands. It’ll be their job to
smother out any unwanted fires. Make sure you discuss what you want
them to do in case you catch fire before you light up.
4) Take a quick look over your equipment.
Ensure that all clasps, links, bolts, etc. on your chains and wicks
are in good shape and secure. Watch out for those quick links! Unless
you tighten them with needle-nose pliers, they tend to loosen themselves.
5) Set up a fuel station away from where you light up, keeping all fuels
in metal containers. Empty paint tins are ideal containers for dipping
your fire props. Don’t use plastic or glass as fuel containers.
Plastic will melt if anything goes wrong, and glass can shatter.
There should be no open flame in this immediate area!
6) Wear natural fabrics and tie up long hair.
Fabrics with plastic in them (i.e. polyester, nylon, fun fur, etc.)
will melt to your skin if burned. Cotton and hemp are good choices.
7) Only fire spin if you feel you're ready.
Don't rush into it. Just do it in your own time and in your own way.
8) Never spin fire when too intoxicated or in an altered state of mind.
Concentration and co-ordination are essential to safe fire spinning.
During your spin
1) Dip your wicks in your
fuel tin.
Please see our Fuel Safety page for more information on the correct
fuels to use.
2) Always spin off.
Before you light your wicks, you can take a separate empty container
and spin off the extra fuel in the tin, or you can find an open space
away from other people and the fuel and spin off there. We recommend
having an extra paint tin because you save fuel and are nicer to the
environment.
3) Don't light your poi or cigarettes near the fuel.
4) If you happen to light yourself on fire, STAY CALM!
Call your safety over and have them extinguish the flames with the wet
towel. In the worst case scenario, drop your poi/staff/toys and stop,
drop and roll.
5) Most importantly, have fun.
After your Spin
If you've finished fire spinning
for the evening, it's always a good idea to do the following:
1) Pack up all your gear. Take a second glance around to make sure that
you haven't left anything.
2) Take all your garbage and empty fuel tins with you.
